Sustainable demand chain toward prosperity of NPD projects: a systematic review

Manufacturing organisations are currently experiencing a tight competition with their global rivals through new product offerings. With the viewpoint of rapid developing sustainable practices, this research pursues to investigate the impact of sustainable practices within demand driven distribution networks towards effective planning for product development purposes. Utilising the systematic review method of literature, different angles of this emerging perspective will be clarified. In the first step, we identify new product development (NPD) approaches as well as identification of traditional supply chain and demand chain approaches followed by scrutinising current world literature and a critical review as inputs of research findings. The systematic literature is guided by five key steps recommended by previous studies. A systematic literature review is conducted comprising of 75 scientific journal and conference papers from the year 2000 to 2020 towards analysis and discussions. The proposed conceptual framework provides with six propositions to be further measured, tested and validated. This research highlights the need for both academia and industries to combine the demand chain rising theories with sustainable supply chain to act as inputs towards increasing the success rate of NPD projects.

Integration of Sustainability and sustainable practices have been of paramount importance within most manufacturers' supply chain environment globally. Apart from the fact that every organisation now use this to improve on their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), this is also used as an opportunity to manage production and services within most firms efficiently. This sustainability is now a strategy adopted by most businesses to meet their customers' expectation considering the sustainable society awareness of which food manufacturing is not an exception. The use of several innovative strategies and incorporation of Industry 4.0 has been employed by some food manufacturers to meet up with this sustainability. This paper through a qualitative research study seeks to bridge the interconnection between Industry 4.0 and sustainable practices within food manufacturing supply chain.

The global perception of industry 4.0 for reverse logistics

Industry 4.0 (I 4.0) is currently recognised as a collective expression for different technologies. The gradual but steady adoption of different technologies in industry 4.0 plays a vital role in different areas of industries. Reverse logistics has been now a growing research area including identifying ways for industries to operate efficiently with industry 4.0. The potentials for cost reduction and profit maximisation have been realised by the involved corporations and a significant number of them is already investing heavily on the new technologies that result in efficient reverse logistics and performance. Researchers now believe that improving the reverse logistics results in sustainable developments in the current competitive market. In this paper researcher aims to focus on the impacts of Industry 4.0 over the reverse logistics.

Climate change ranks highly among the challenges faced by humanity in the world today and negatively emasculate efforts for communities to attain sustainable development. All the countries are introducing new legislation practices that help to minimize environmental degradation and resulting climate change. Business are being compelled to adapt innovative supply chain practices, methods and processes that minimizes the impact on the environment, reduces human susceptibility from the effects of climate change and environmental degradation. In line with this thyme of environmentally friendly business processes, this paper looks at how logistics and supply chain management for pharmaceutical products to the public health sector by XYZ Limited (XYZ) in Zambia have been enhanced after the implementation of the Warehouse Management System (WMS).

There has been a vast development within the span of three centuries of industrial revolution with the introduction of modern technology. The gradual but steady adoption of different technologies including Internet of Things (IoT) in Industry 4.0 (I4.0) is now a growing research area including identifying ways for industries to operate their functions. The implementation of IoT in all aspects of human life, which results a fast paced daily life activities is a clear indication that the future is here now. The potentials for cost reduction and profit maximisation have been realised by the involved corporations and a significant number of them is already investing heavily on the new technologies. Scientists now believe that empowering the Internet of Things (IoT) to have artificial intelligence (AI) could help human beings to complete works more smartly and efficiently. The paper aims to focus on the impacts of IoT that affects the supply change management and will explain the reasons that have led to the ever-growing adoption of IoT.

Industry 4.0 and autonomous transportation: the impacts on supply chain management

Within the span of three centuries of industrial revolution and through the introduction of modern technology, the environmental and socio-economic impacts are of greater importance than ever. The gradual but steady adoption of autonomous transportation in Industry 4.0 (I4.0) is now a growing research area and on identifying ways for industries to operate their functions. The implementation of autonomous guidance vehicles in all aspects of human life, from self-driving cars and unmanned aircraft, to package delivery drones and robot vacuum cleaners, is a clear indication that the future is here now. The potentials for cost reduction and profit maximisation have been realised by the involved corporations and a significant number of them is already investing heavily on the new technologies. This has become a critical factor when designing and implementing such autonomous guided vehicles (AGV) and the introduction of more eco-friendly technologies will be of vital importance for their future development. The paper aims to focus on the impacts of Autonomous Transportation that affects the logistics industry and will explain the reasons that have led to the ever-growing adoption of AGV’s but will also take into consideration the desire of humans to retain final control over their creations.

Sustainability adoption in project management practices within a social enterprise case

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present the preliminary findings on the use of sustainable project management practices within social enterprise projects. The research gaps within this field have proposed the authors to address the challenges rising from lack of sustainable infrastructures in social-based projects both within for-profit and non-profit organisations. On the other side, behavioural needs and sustainable awareness of different stakeholders will be examined.
Design/methodology/approach Secondary research consists of conducting a literature review clarifying the existing knowledge of the research topic within the body of literature. The stakeholders’ behavioural needs towards acting and implementing sustainable practices led to the adoption of sustainable practices within projects which are managed across profit and non-profit organisations.
Findings The lack of sustainable behaviour and its adoption within organisations is also highlighted. The limitation of the research is the importance of integration of sustainable development (SD) within social projects. Such projects were identified as the drivers towards educating the society towards future generations’ sustainability awareness. However, if the adoption of sustainable practices is well established in some sectors (such as construction), literature tends to demonstrate a lack of information regarding other sectors, especially within social enterprises.
Originality/value The novelty of the research is to develop an early understanding regarding linkages between sustainable practices and project management programmes within the social projects. The particular focus is given to corporate social responsibility and the comparative analysis has been made among for-profit and non-profit organisations in terms of SD metrics. The study results would be beneficial to the researchers and practitioners exploring within the same field.

An examination of product development approaches within demand driven supply chains

Purpose – Innovation has been considered as the most important factor in today’s global and competitive environments for meeting growth, customer demands and expectations for any product development environment. This research study examines the concepts of sustainable development, its practices and impacts within demand driven supply chain environments. This paper is part of a wider project and within later stages of the study, a novel framework will be developed in order to link new product development (NPD) and demand chain management (DCM) aspects from the analysis of the research findings.
Design/methodology/approach – This research has adopted the approach of descriptive method which tends to examine demand chain concept and its evolution through recent years, while having a particular focus into NPD projects.
Findings – The paper investigates early study models through key findings of the literature that focuses on demand chain and NPD for the use and implementation of sustainability measures within manufacturing environments. The research study highlights the need for incorporation of NPD-DCM through the entire business ecosystem entities and also through the flow of information, materials and resources within the structure of the supply chain. The study finds out the key hurdles of the companies towards adoption of demand-driven supply chains in NPD environments, such as lack of cross-organisational association and lack of innovative demand chain frameworks.
Originality/value – The novelty of the research is to develop an early understanding within demand driven supply chains, considering the product development programmes particularly focused on marketing activities. The study provides future researchers with a platform to undertake studies within similar function of demand driven supply chain environments

Case study analysis of sustainable supply chain redesign linking with new product development

This research seeks to investigate the new product development (NPD) approaches and the supply chain redesign strategies as part of the sustainable development. A systematic approach of literature review will be undertaken in order for effective gathering a set of structured data to act as a basis for the further discussions. The case of Boeing Dreamliner provides with a qualitative research method in order for critical analysis of the main concepts of the research. According to the inclusive Dreamliner’s development programme and the risks and threats associated with supply chain redesign, this paper defines a comprehensive framework in order to minimise the potential failures and delays within the future aircraft development approaches. The paper studies the supply chain redesign of NPD programme within the aircraft industry; therefore, there is a need for other types of industries to be investigated due to their different features and necessities. The systematic review of Dreamliner case provides an opportunity for creating a well-defined framework addressing supply chain sustainability and NPD project management challenges. All the supply chain entities especially within aircraft industries would benefit from the paper results in order to receive the best advantages from NPD practices and global supply chain methods.

Study of energy savings and sustainable practices adoption in telecommunication services

The concerted efforts of keeping up with the environment and mitigating the consequences of climate change should focus more towards reducing carbon oxides and other greenhouse gases emissions within stipulated regulations. One of the ways to achieve this is through adoption of sustainable practices within industries and organisations by encouraging more of energy saving practices and reduction of carbon footprint within all production, commercial and service related functions. Nigeria, an emerging economy nation, is identified with higher emission of greenhouse gases due to downstream gas flaring combined with rapid industrialisation, urbanisation and commercialisation activities. This research paper examines the potential impacts of energy saving within Nigerian telecommunications industry, and highlights how the cell sites base stations within the industry have great challenges and threats towards the climate change from the amount of energy generated and used within the system. The paper conducts a literature study on general energy overview, usage, impacts and concepts towards the benefits of energy saving practices. The overview, concepts and benefits of energy savings and renewable energy technology were also reviewed. Further investigations within the concept of energy saving towards using sustainable methods for addressing the climate change issues was also carried out. The research used a sustainability ranking procedure with both economic and environmental analysis to conduct a sustainability assessment on some identified renewable energy technologies such as wind, solar, geothermal. The result of the analysis of the research was able to come up with about €16.4B of potential energy savings cost within the fifteen years of operation if the recommended alternative energy could be used. This sustainability assessment had been conducted towards providing recommendations for more sustainable, suitable, alternative and affordable strategies for replacing or complementing conventional methods of powering telecoms industries in future.
