Expertise

Dr Ben Wilkinson is a writer, poet, critic, freelancer and academic, currently lecturing in Creative and Professional Writing at the University of Greater Manchester, Bolton. Wilkinson received his first degree in English and Philosophy from the University of Sheffield, and holds an MA and PhD from Sheffield Hallam University. He has won several awards for his poetry, including the International Poetry Business Competition, a Northern Writers Award, and multiple individual grants from Arts Council England. His writing has regularly appeared in national publications including The Guardian, The Spectator, The New Statesman, and the Times Literary Supplement. He has published two volumes of original poetry, Way More Than Luck (Seren, 2018; highly commended in the Forward Prizes) and Same Difference (Seren, 2022), and the critical monograph Don Paterson: Writers and Their Work (Liverpool University Press, 2021). With Paul Deaton and Kim Moore, he edited The Result Is What You See Today (smith|doorstop, 2019), a anthology of poems about running endorsed by Jo Pavey MBE. Wilkinson is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and from 2021-25 served as external examiner for the BA English Literature & Creative Writing at Northumbria University.
