Abstract

Materialism Alchemy Religion Excess Heresy Monstrosity Body Bataille Hyperstition
This paper offers a genealogy of European materialism via Carlo Ginzburg’s account of peasant heresy and Eirenaeus Philalethes’ alchemy. Drawing on Georges Bataille and Nick Land, it is argued that there is a necessary monstrosity to material thinking which forces us to reconsider the materially transformative powers of the imagination.
