Abstract
Purpose – This paper explores the potential origins of emetophobia, examining psychological and
cognitive links, social indications and possible triggers for the development of this phobia. The purpose
of this review is to collate recent evidence (within the last ten years) and create a logical, and plausible
account of how individuals develop emetophobia.
Design/methodology/approach – Online databases were searched using phrases such as
emetophobia or specific phobia of vomiting, from these 91 papers in total were sourced and 15 were
included in the review.
Findings – The review presents a synthesis of the available evidence relating to the origins and
development of emetophobia, it identified four main themes which were: traumatic and early life
experiences; cognitive or psychological factors; social factors; and avoidance and safety behaviours
reinforcing the phobia.
Originality/value – These themes give insightful detail into an avenue of emetophobia which has not
been considered in past research, however further primary research is required to advance
understanding and inform treatment.
